I'm working on my homebrew ruleset, and I'm hammering out how character advancement will work. What I can't decide is how many progress units (call them experience points, build points, what have you) I want to award characters per typical session.
The core question I keep running into is, how fast should characters progress?
Assuming one four-hour gaming session per week, how long should it take for characters to reach the following benchmarks? (Also assume the character is actively seeking to achieve these goals; the GM isn't just handing them out.)
proficiency in a brand new, unfamiliar skill
ability to fight two or more average, human NPCs with a reasonable chance to win
leadership of an in-game organization
legendary status and recognition within the game world
the highest level of mastery of one thing (swordfighting, kung fu) available in the system
godhood (if this option is allowed at all)
